Introducing Rainbow Tea and Talk, a New Program for LGBTQ+ Seniors!

Emma Moeck

Sunshine Centres for Seniors is happy to introduce a new program, Rainbow Tea and Talk! After seeing the success of the virtual Rainbow Circle program, Rainbow Tea and Talk was created to give LGBTQ+ seniors another way to come together as a community.

Over the past two months, virtual Rainbow Circle has proven to be immensely popular, seeing record participation numbers for our online programming that even rival our in-person program attendance. It has been amazing to see an overflow of participants connect to the Zoom-based program every Wednesday morning, eager to chat, catch up, and connect with one another. That’s why program facilitator Irene Gabinet saw the need for another program.

“In the Rainbow Program, there would normally be a good half hour before where people would come out and chat with each other, and it’s a bit tricky to turn that into a Zoom thing in the Wednesday program,” Irene says. “The Tuesday program is going to give us a chance to just have a chat.”

The format for the Rainbow Tea and Talk program is similar to our Coffee, Tea, and Sunshine program, which also offers a party-line style chat for seniors. The new Tuesday program, however, offers a  specific place for LGBTQ+ seniors to stay social, keep connected with each other, and have fun while staying at home.

Staying connected to a community or chosen family has always been meaningful to the LGBTQ+ community. With COVID-19 affecting our ability to meet in person, it is more important than ever to find other ways to stay social.

Rainbow Tea and Talk is offered every Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. through  Zoom or by dialing in over the phone. Grab some tea or coffee and come talk!
